Cleaning jewelry without chemicals

Hello, there, everyone.

I am amazed to find few people know the old-fashioned way to clean silver, gemstones, and fine jewelry without using harsh chemicals, which are detrimental to your health and environment. My grandmother had me help her polish her silverware and jewelry when I was about 8 years old, to keep me occupied and feeling helpful. I loved doing it for her and have always cleaned my jewelry, silver plate, and other shiny metals using her method. It is cheap, easy, and you probably have this in your kitchen cabinets. So… what is it?

Baking soda and vinegar!

Here’s how:

  1. First, soak jewelry or silverware in hot water with baking soda for several minutes. This helps soften dirt, grease, and grime.
  2. Add about a capful or more, if needed, into the soaking water. This will fizz up, so be careful not to pour in too much, or you will have a foaming mess.
  3. Take a toothbrush or soft cloth, dip it into the solution to get it wet, then into the dry baking soda.
  4. Begin to scrub and polish your jewelry or items you have been soaking. You can also dip it into vinegar to get a foaming scrub working, too. This is similar to how oxyclean works.
  5. I have also used a toothpaste with baking soda in it, to polish my jewelry. It won’t scratch or harm your metal or stones.
  6. Rinse in warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Your jewelry will sparkle and shine as if brand new.

I have had all kinds of requests from people, asking how to clean their jewelry in a safe, yet effective way. This one tip helped get me a “Top 10,000 reviewer” on my eBay store. So, thanks to all who voted me up!
